Chinese ID required? Booking China attractions with a foreign passport
An attraction form rejects your passport? Find the correct official booking route, check your existing order, and show staff a ready-made Chinese phrase.
A Chinese-ID-only form does not automatically mean foreign visitors cannot book. First check whether you are using the attraction’s official passport or international booking route. The Palace Museum and Mogao Caves have different official routes; there is no single booking process that works for every attraction in China.
Start with the form, not another payment
- Look for a document-type selector, an English page, or a separate international booking entry. Do not put a passport number into a field labelled “身份证” (Chinese identity card).
- Confirm the attraction’s exact name and open its own official website or account. A reseller’s form may not offer the same document choices.
- If you already attempted payment, check the order history and confirmation before starting again. Keep the order reference available for staff; a payment notification alone does not tell you where to enter.
Two verified examples
Beijing: Palace Museum. Beijing’s official visitor FAQ directs foreign visitors to the museum’s English website to book using a passport. It also says to bring the original valid document used for the booking and use manual ticket checking at the Meridian Gate, the south entrance. Start from the official Palace Museum website. Read Beijing’s official FAQ.
Dunhuang: Mogao Caves. The Dunhuang Academy’s 2026 notice directs foreign-passport holders to its official WeChat service account, “莫高窟参观预约网”, then “预约购票” → “Ticket Booking”. This is a timed, real-name reservation system. The notice requires the visitor, ticket and identity document to match, and identifies the digital exhibition centre as the first stop. A passport route is not a promise that tickets remain available. Read the Academy’s 2026 booking notice.
Before you ask for help
Have the attraction name, intended date, error message and any existing order reference ready. Ask staff to point to the official entry and the correct document option. Keep passport numbers and payment details within the official booking service; you do not need to enter them into a phrase card.
