If a metro gate does not open, pause and ask staff to check the card, reader and journey status. Beijing and Shanghai both support eligible international bank cards, but a familiar card-network logo is not a guarantee that every card or device will work. These checks concern those two cities, not every metro system in China.

What the official notices confirm

Beijing: the city’s June 2025 announcement lists UnionPay, Mastercard, Visa, JCB and American Express support across its rail network. It describes tapping a card at the designated gate reader, without needing to install an app for that card-based entry. Beijing’s official announcement.

Shanghai: the metro’s June 2025 announcement describes network-wide contactless entry with eligible cards from those five networks. It lists technical exceptions, including cards without offline data authentication, and asks users to enable the relevant small-payment, password-free function. For problems, it directs passengers to station service centres or their card issuer. Shanghai’s official announcement.

At the gate: choose the right next step

  1. Before entering: ask which reader accepts your card. Show the card’s network and contactless symbol to staff. Do not hand over your security code or bank password.
  2. After a rejected tap: step out of the moving queue. Note the message on the reader and tell staff whether the gate opened at all. Ask whether the card is supported or whether you should buy a ticket instead.
  3. If you are already inside: explain that this is an exit problem. Keep the card or device you used to enter ready so staff can investigate that journey. Explain any switch between a phone and a physical card.
  4. If your bank shows a payment: show staff the relevant transaction with private details hidden. Ask them to check the journey before you try another payment method; a bank notification does not explain a gate error.

What to show staff

In Beijing: “I want to use the metro. Can this payment method be used at this gate?”

我想乘坐地铁。请问这种支付方式可以在这个闸机使用吗?

Open the free Beijing card. In Shanghai, use the free foreign-card and reader card, which asks staff to point out the reader or another ticket option.

For further communication, open the Beijing metro guide or Shanghai metro guide. Save the relevant phrase before travelling so that asking for help does not depend on translating a new sentence at the gate.
